Just say yes

Went to see Winter’s Bone at a Melbourne Film Festival preview yesterday. It was interesting, cruel, gripping and beautiful. But that’s not what I want to write about. I want to write about free sex. Det ni.*

Exchange students tend to do stuff they wouldn’t do at home. Here in Australia nobody knows you. All the preconceptions of you that might exist are about your home country (which apparently is “the country of Europe”), not you as a person. Nobody at home will know what you do. For some people this means casual sex. And if it’s what you want, and you’re safe, and it’s with someone nice, I say go for it. But it makes me sad that people have to travel to the other side of the world to feel free to do it.

As you may imagine this is a topic that has come up during the first weeks here – in more or less spoken terms. Mostly less. It might be just in my head, but people can be quite judgmental about it – especially when talking about a girl. It makes me so angry that there still is a double standard for men and women when it comes to casual sex. I can’t wrap my head around it.

The idea about a world of free sex for one and all is an illusion. Anna Kontulainen wrote a good post about this a while back for all you who know Finnish.

* Colloquial swedish expression. Too lazy to think of an English equivalent.
